Nelson is well-known in the salsa community as a dance teacher, dance competition judge. He is the founder and creative director of the world renowned latin dance production company Descarga Latina. In 1997 the team began as a small salsa dance troupe (with many previous members of Santo Rico Dance Company), and then slowly evolved into something much more. Nelson started working professionally in the world of Latin dance over 16 years ago. In that time he has performed and taught all over the world and has participated in every major Salsa Festival. Nelson is one of the most sought after salsa dancers today; and is one of the pioneers of the New York style Salsa “On2”.
Nelson has performed and choreographed for many renowned Latin artists, such as the late Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Oscar De Leon, Ruben Blades, Tito Nieves, Jerry Rivera, Fania All-Stars, Marc Anthony, La India and many more. He co-created an Off-Broadway show called “Latin Madness,” where he participated as a performer, director, choreographer, producer, and project manager. Additionally, Nelson has performed at every major venue in NY (Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden, Waldorf Astoria, Radio City Music Hall, Shea Stadium and Yankee Stadium).
Nelson continues to show his versatility by wearing many hats; managing his group, serving as a choreographer, producer and project manager and working as an event planner for the NYNJ Salsa Festival from 2005-2007 and also served four times at the prestigious Puerto Rico Salsa Open Championship. Nelson serves as an official Judge for the World Salsa Competition sponsored by sports network giant ESPN. In 2010, he ran the NYC International Salsa Congress “Survival Challenge.” (a much smaller version done Salsa Fiesta 2012 and 2013). He has been on Univision, and has traveled overseas to share his love of salsa beyond NYC, teaching and representing the salsa community internationally. Known for his smooth style, which continually honors the roots of salsa, Nelson teaches authentic, musical choreography and combinations. Nelson is also one of the certifying instructors at the Puerto Rico Salsa Congress.
Nelson has been with Salsa Fiesta TnT since 2010 and is now considered an integral part of the Salsa Fiesta team. We are very happy to welcome Nelson back in 2015.
Veronica is a DanceSport bred instructor after having been chosen by Paul Pellicoro to be part of an apprentice program that would cultivate new and talented teachers. She moved to NYC from Texas where she has spent years training in ballet, jazz, tap, flamenco, and hip hop.
In 2005 she graduated from The American Musical & Dramatic Academy. Veronica tells a story about her days at AMDA…”when I was going to school at AMDA we had a weekly voice lesson and mine happened to be in a room with a window behind my voice coach that looked into one of the ballrooms in the old DanceSport at Columbus Circle. It was really hard to focus on what my teacher was telling me to do because I could see a couple dancing through the window. Dancing was my first love so I was always wishing I was doing whatever they were doing in that other room instead of singing my scales. “Every day on my way home I’d walk passed DanceSport and it wasn’t until the year after I graduated that I found the courage to go in and get info on how to sign up and the rest is history!”.
Veronica’s success at DanceSport includes being part of the DanceSport All Stars and placing 4th in the world and 1st in the US at the 2007 ESPN World Salsa Championship. She has represented DanceSport teaching workshops and performing at Salsa Congress’s throughout Europe and the U.S. and continues to bring home 1st place medals with her students in Pro Am competitions.
Veronica’s training has extended her expertise to include all the American Rhythm dances as well as Latin Hustle and Salsa.
Veronica, or Vero as she is fondly known, first appeared at Salsa Fiesta TnT in 2010 alongside Neslon Flores and she has been coming to our event ever since. Salsa Fiesta are pleased to welcome her back to Trinidad for Salsa Fiesta TnT 2015.
